First of all there is much more to a roof than just shingles, there is a variety of roof systems, such as:

Drip edge: is a metal flashing covering the edge of your plywood where it meets the fascia board. This is used to prevent water leaks behind the fascia board.

Ice shield: is a rubber membrane that goes along the edge of the roofline three feet up from the gutter to prevent ice damns melting directly on the plywood to prevent leaks and rotting.

Ridge vent: works in combination with your vented soffits to let air flow in and out. The so called 'wings' from the vent pulls air in from the vented soffits to let the stagnant air flow out of your attic through the ridge vent.

In the summer if your attic space gets over-heated it can actually fry your shingles and that's not covered by any shingle warranties. In the winter if the hot moist air from inside your home gets trapped in the cold attic it can soak your insulation and reduce it's effectiveness by as much as half, even 2% moisture drops the insulating factor by 1/3.That condensation can work its way into the walls so paint and wallpaper won't stick. That condensation can cause extensive structural damage and even mold growth that can become potentially hazardeth for your family.

The most common shingle is a 3-tab (shingles lay flat next to each other) that comes in an array of colors (other colors available). It also comes in various weights per square, which makes them more or less able to withstand stronger winds.
